"Beach fire rings should be banned, the Newport Beach City Council decided tonight in a unanimous vote.

The decision, following about an hour of public testimony, means that city staff will begin to work on a plan to remove the city's 60 rings, located at Big Corona State Beach and near the Balboa Pier. Before the rings are removed, a California Coastal Commission permit must be obtained, Coastal Commission staff has said.

Dozens of residents testified about the fire rings, mostly in support of a ban. They cited studies about the health hazards of wood smoke, the dangers of burning embers, unruly crowds and injuries."
