"For about four months, Fannie Long, 62, said she was feeling lethargic, was battling headaches, was having trouble breathing and had repeated bouts of diarrhea and nausea. At first, the retired home health nurse figured she had some type of virus.

Her doctor said Long's ill health wasn't a virus — it was exposure to benzene. Medical tests came back with results that showed levels of a chemical that is considered a key indicator of benzene exposure."
