"What is coal tar?

Coal tar is a byproduct of the coking of steel and contains what are known as PAHs.

What are PAHs?

PAH means polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a wing of the Department of Human and Health Services, PAHs have been known to cause cancer. The United States Geological Survey says that PAHs are an environmental health issue because several are probable human carcinogens and they are toxic to fish and other aquatic life. At least one PAH is found in coal tar sealant, benzo[a]pyrene."
