"Like prison wardens and World Cup goalkeepers, book critics toss and turn over the ones that got away. The books they should have pounced upon, that is, but did not.   One such book, people have been telling me, is "Full Body Burden: Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats," by Kristen Iversen. Ms. Iversen's book was issued back in June. I'm getting to it now because I couldn't shoulder the guilt — my hard-to-please wife is among its importuning admirers — for another day. Ms. Iversen grew up in the 1960s and '70s in the small town of Arvada, Colo., about 10 miles from Denver, where most of the fathers worked at one of two nearby factories. The first belonged to Coors, whose weak brew was derided as "Colorado Kool-Aid." More mysterious, and thus prestigious, employment was found at Rocky Flats, a secret nuclear plant where employees made the plutonium warhead triggers for America's cold war nuclear arsenal."

"To be delivered to: Michelle Obama, First Lady:
Michelle, tell President Obama to honor his campaign promise to require GMO labeling and ask him to endorse California's Proposition 37, a citizens' ballot initiative to label GMOs."

Are GMOs on the White House Menu?

VIEW THIS ONLINE | OCA Homepage

Dear Organic Consumer,

Ninety percent of mothers and 88 percent of fathers are in favor of labeling GE foods, according to a recent survey by the Mellman Group. But two key parents are holding out: President and Mrs. Obama.

Please ask Michelle Obama to remind the President of his campaign promise to label GMOs, and to show his support for GMO labeling by endorsing Prop 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.

More than 185,000 people have already signed on. We need to reach 200,000 signatures by Oct. 1, so we can deliver the petition to the White House.

Just last week, an important new study raised even more questions about the health consequences of GMOs. Given Michelle Obama's stance on organic gardens and healthy school lunches, we have to ask: Would she let her children choose food from a grocery store without knowing whether that food item contained GMO ingredients? When her family sits down to dinner, does the menu include GMO foods?

On the campaign trail in 2007, then-candidate Obama promised to support the right to know what's in our food. But President Obama has since sided with Monsanto - not the voters who elected him, not the 90% of people in this country who want GMOs labeled.

We are at a critical point in the battle to label GMOs. On Nov. 6, California voters will vote YES or NO on what could become this country's first mandatory GMO labeling bill. We must win this basic right - a right that citizens in nearly 50 other countries already have.

Mrs. Obama is the President's closest confidante. So we're calling on her to tell President Obama: Keep your word. Listen to the people, not the corporations. Do the right thing.

We may not be able to change the President's mind with a petition. But we promise we'll get his attention and hold him accountable - in an election year - for what he promised us four years ago.

Please help us pressure the White House to side with the more than 90% of Americans who want the basic right to know which foods on their grocery shelves contain GMOs, and which don't.

In Solidarity with California Voters,

Ronnie Cummins
Director, Organic Consumers Association and Organic Consumers Fund

P.S.
We are raising this money on behalf of Prop 37, in order to print signs and leaflets, mobilize thousands of volunteers, and get out the vote in California. We're all in this together – please help. Thank you!

Decades later, PBB contamination suspected in illnesses and deaths

"Lori Morris doesn't have a thyroid; her sister's esophagus was removed years ago.  Three out of four of Hilda Green's grown children are gone, each plagued with health problems and one dead at 50 of leukemia.  Jim Buchanan has a litany of health problems that began in his early 30s -- arthritis, gout, irregular heartbeats. Diabetes claimed his daughter at 24. At 63, he's waiting for a heart transplant.  They don't know one another. They live in different parts of the state.  But each suspects the same three-letter toxin: PBB.  "I know there's not proof or nothing, and maybe there never will be," said Morris, 55, a Garden City resident who works in sales. Her thyroid, doctors told her, was gone by the time she was 18. "But we were healthy -- perfectly healthy -- until that PBB mess."  It has been four decades since one of the most catastrophic agricultural disasters in U.S. history unfolded in the heart of Michigan, forcing the destruction of tens of thousands of cattle contaminated with polybrominated biphenyl, or PBB, and allowing the chemical to slip onto the dinner plates and into the drinking glasses of nine out of 10 Michiganders."

Information from the Michigan Department of Health on what PBB is and how it got into the feed:
 http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdch_PBB_FAQ_92051_7.pdf

What happened in Michigan in 1973?
"In early 1973, both PBB (sold under the trade name FireMaster) and magnesium oxide (a cattle feed supplement sold under the trade name NutriMaster) were produced at the same St. Louis, Michigan plant by the Michigan Chemical Company. A shortage of preprinted paper bag containers led to 10 to 20 fiftypound bags of PBB accidentally being sent to Michigan Farm Bureau Services in place of NutriMaster.  This accident was not recognized until long after the bags had been shipped to feed mills and used in the production of feed for dairy cattle. By the time the mix-up was discovered in April 1974, PBB had entered the food chain through milk and other dairy products, beef products, and contaminated swine, sheep, chickens and eggs. As a result of this incident, over 500 contaminated Michigan farms were quarantined, and approximately 30,000 cattle, 4,500 swine, 1,500 sheep, and 1.5 million chickens were destroyed, along with over 800 tons of animal feed, 18,000 pounds of cheese, 2,500 pounds of butter, 5 million eggs, and 34,000 pounds of dried milk products."

Kids exposed to mercury or lead more likely to have ADHD symptoms, Canadian study finds
http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ehs/news/2012/adhd-lead-and-mercury

"Children exposed to higher levels of mercury or lead are three to five times more likely to be identified by teachers as having problems associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, according to a scientific study published today. The study, of Inuit children living in Arctic Canada, is the first to find a high rate of attention-deficit symptoms in children highly exposed to mercury in the womb. In addition, the Inuit children more often had hyperactivity symptoms if they were exposed to the same low levels of lead commonly found in young U.S. children. Laval University scientist Gina Muckle said the findings are important because they show for the first time that the effects of mercury in children are not just subtle, but are actually noticeable to teachers. They "may be clinically significant and may interfere with learning and performance in the classroom," the study says. For lead, the school teachers reported much more frequent ADHD symptoms at levels far below the CDC's newly developed health guideline. Dr. Bruce Lanphear, of Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, said evidence is mounting that toxic compounds are "shifting children's behavior...There seem to be a whole host of different toxicants that are associated with ADHD." One of the most intriguing findings was that mercury was linked to attention deficits while lead was associated with hyperactivity. The difference may be the timing of the exposures: in the womb for mercury and during childhood for lead. The findings "suggest the brain may be sensitive to different environmental chemicals at different times in development," said Harvard epidemiologist Joe Braun."

"Behind the profit-fuelled rise of smartphones and tablets, microwave pollution is a serious assault on health. Known for their beauty, aspens have been in decline across North America, with some dramatic losses in recent years. Aware of the rapid growth of radiofrequency (RF) radiation, particularly from mobile-phone 'towers', Colorado researcher Katie Haggerty had an inspiration: she planted three test plots of aspen seedlings. Carefully matched in all other respects, one plot was shielded from a nearby town's RF radiation, one was 'mock' shielded, and the other was left unprotected. The difference, recorded in the International Journal of Forestry Research, was startling: the fully shielded saplings were vigorous and healthy, but both the 'mock' shielded and the exposed plants were small, lacked pigments, and had sickly leaves."

Abstract
Studies in different populations have shown that ischemic stroke can trigger an acute phase response resulting in a rise of plasma concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP). However, there are very limited studies on CRP and first ischemic stroke divided into subtypes. High levels of CRP may also be associated with poor outcome. The present study was taken up to investigate the prognostic value of CRP within 24 h of onset of ischemic stroke. Five hundred and eighty one patients with first stroke and 575 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were involved in the study. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels were estimated, and follow-up interviews were conducted with patients at 3, 6, and 12 months post-event to determine stroke outcome. In addition to this plasma, NO( x ) (nitrate and nitrite) was measured to detect the serum NO (an important biomarker of inflammation and oxidative stress) levels in ischemic stroke patients and controls. The relationship between CRP value and poor outcome (>2 on modified Rankin Scale Score and <5 on an extended Glasgow outcome scale) was studied. There was a significant association between elevated levels of CRP and NO with the disease. A stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed these findings after adjustment for potential confounders [adjusted odds ratio = 2.890, 95% CI (1.603-5.011) with p < 0.01 and adjusted odds ratio = 2.364, 95% CI (1.312-3.998) with p < 0.01 for hsCRP and NO, respectively]. After adjustment of potential confounders, patients with high CRP levels had a significant increased risk of poor outcome [adjusted odds ratio = 3.50, 95% CI (1.312-6.365) and p < 0.001]. Elevated levels of hsCRP associated significantly with all stroke subtypes classified according to Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment classification except for lacunar stroke and stroke of other determined etiology. In conclusion, hsCRP and NO levels predict the incidence of ischemic stroke and hsCRP is an independent prognostic factor of poor outcome at 3 months.

Hot Off the Press: Rats Fed GMO Corn Die Young

What happens when rats are fed a lifetime diet of Monsanto's GMO corn, or exposed to Monsanto's top-selling weedkiller, Roundup? It's not pretty. Tumors. Kidney damage. Liver damage.

In a study released yesterday - the first-ever long-term study of its kind - French scientists reported that rats fed a diet containing the herbicide-tolerant GM maize, or given water containing Roundup in amounts considered safe in drinking water and GM crops in the US, died sooner than the rats fed just the standard diet.

Will this be enough to make the FDA start conducting independent testing of GMO's - before allowing these products into our food supply? Or will the FDA continue to pander to Monsanto and tell us that GMO products are 'not substantially different' than non-GMO products?

Things You Don't Want in Your Organic Food...

Oxidized lignite from coal, fertilizer additives that cause acid rain, the pesticide PGML that harms beneficial soil organisms, synthetic nutrients to keep chickens alive under factory farm conditions, synthetic ingredients in infant formula.

These could all be OK'd by the National Organic Standards Board for USDA certified organic food if we don't speak out.

Consumers beware! Products bearing the NPA Natural Seal are not as natural as you think. The Natural Products Association (NPA) has certified more than 800 personal care products with its NPA Natural Seal – and many of those products contain genetically modified ingredients.

The NPA, whose members include DuPont, Bayer, and BASF – all of whom have contributed millions of dollars to defeat Prop 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, - has sided with the biotech industry by publicly opposing Prop 37.

Tell the NPA to put the "Natural" back in "Natural" and stop deceiving consumers with its NPA Natural Seal on products that contain GMOs!

If You Eat Food, This Is Your Fight

In less than 3 weeks, California voters will begin casting their ballots – yes or no – on Prop 37, the California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act. By November 6, the most critical – and winnable – battle to label GMOs will be decided.

This is a battle that pits the people – you, me, moms, dads, rich, poor, young, old - against fat-cat pesticide, biotech, and junk-food corporations who for years have shamelessly manipulated science, the political system, and the truth in order to rack up obscene profits at the expense of your health and safety.

This is a battle we must win. The opposition has raised more than $32 million to kill this initiative. Monsanto alone has kicked in $7.1 million.

Please read Ronnie's latest letter about why this battle is so critical, and how you can help win it. And then, if you haven't already pitched in, help us reach our $1 million goal by Sept. 30. And please share this letter with as many people as possible. Thank you!

Whole Foods: Stand Against Forced Child Labor & Worker Rights Abuses

Sign the petition!

Why is Whole Foods buying chocolate from Hershey's - a company that exploits children for profit? According to a U.S. Government-funded study, over 1.8 million children work in West Africa's cocoa industry. Many of these children are exposed to dangerous working conditions and some are even trafficked and sold off to perform grueling labor.

Every major chocolate maker has agreed to make a major commitment to sourcing ethical chocolate, but Hershey's – the maker of Dagoba and Scharffenberger - refuses to budge.

In August, a coalition of grocery stores called on Hershey's to commit to using ethically sourced cocoa. Unfortunately, Whole Foods refused to sign the coalition's appeal. Surprised? You shouldn't be. After all, UNFI, Whole Foods primary supplier, wants to force its employees who perform dangerous warehouse work to accept unfair compensation in spite of posting record profits.

It's time for Whole Foods and UNFI to respect workers' rights and join other natural food stores in pointing out to Hershey's that ethically sourcing a small amount of the company's overall chocolate does not erase the fact that most of Hershey's profits are earned at the expense of children.

Sign the petition to Whole Foods and UNFI!

"The smell of fresh air is becoming something of a distant memory, thanks to our increasing use of fragrance. From air fresheners to scented candles, perfumed loo roll and bin liners, in-car scents and even scented socks, we live in a miasma of scent.  Share a lift or train carriage and the aroma of spray deodorant and perfume can be overwhelming. Recent figures show seven in ten use air fresheners or scented candles to keep our homes smelling sweet.   Yet recent reports suggest that perfumed products could affect our health, causing problems including allergies, asthma and migraine, and even interfere with sexual desire."

Abstract
Environmental compounds are known to promote epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of disease. The current study was designed to determine if a "pesticide mixture" (pesticide permethrin and insect repellent N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide, DEET) promotes epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of disease and associated DNA methylation epimutations in sperm. Gestating F0 generation female rats were exposed during fetal gonadal sex determination and the incidence of disease evaluated in F1 and F3 generations. There were significant increases in the incidence of total diseases in animals from pesticide lineage F1 and F3 generation animals. Pubertal abnormalities, testis disease, and ovarian disease (primordial follicle loss and polycystic ovarian disease) were increased in F3 generation animals. Analysis of the pesticide lineage F3 generation sperm epigenome identified 363 differential DNA methylation regions (DMR) termed epimutations. Observations demonstrate that a pesticide mixture (permethrin and DEET) can promote epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of adult onset disease and potential sperm epigenetic biomarkers for ancestral environmental exposures

"The overuse of antibiotics in animal agriculture and medicine is putting human lives at unnecessary risk and driving up medical costs, according to a group of group of 150 scientists that includes a former head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).   Along with 50 US farmers and ranchers who have opted out of using non-therapeutic antibiotics in their animal feed, the scientists are calling on the FDA and Congress to work together to regulate unnecessary use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.  In twin statements released on Wednesday, the scientists and farmers said that a growing body of research supported the conclusion that overuse of antibiotics in animal agriculture is fueling a health crisis. One statement cited a study which estimated that antibiotic-resistant infections cost $20bn annually to hospitals alone."

The study, conducted by a prominent opponent of genetically engineered crops, was immediately criticized by some other scientists, who said the methods were flawed and that other research had not found similar problems.

But in California, proponents of a ballot measure that would require genetically modified foods to be labeled immediately seized on the study as support for their cause. Abstract
Concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in office environments are generally too low to cause sensory irritation in the eyes and airways on the basis of estimated thresholds for sensory irritation. Furthermore, effects in the lungs, e.g. inflammatory effects, have not been substantiated at indoor relevant concentrations. Some VOCs, including formaldehyde, in combination may under certain environmental and occupational conditions result in reported sensory irritation. The odour thresholds of several VOCs are low enough to influence the perceived air quality that result in a number of acute effects from reported sensory irritation in eyes and airways and deterioration of performance. The odour perception (air quality) depends on a number of factors that may influence the odour impact. There is neither clear indication that office dust particles may cause sensory effects, even not particles spiked with glucans, aldehydes or phthalates, nor lung effects; some inflammatory effects may be observed among asthmatics. Ozone-initiated terpene reaction products may be of concern in ozone-enriched environments (≥0.1mg/m(3)) and elevated limonene concentrations, partly due to the production of formaldehyde. Ambient particles may cause cardio-pulmonary effects, especially in susceptible people (e.g. elderly and sick people); even, short-term effects, e.g. from traffic emission and candle smoke may possibly have modulating and delayed effects on the heart, but otherwise adverse effects in the airways and lung functions have not been observed. Secondary organic aerosols generated in indoor ozone-initiated terpene reactions appear not to cause adverse effects in the airways; rather the gaseous products are relevant. Combined exposure to particles and ozone may evoke effects in subgroups of asthmatics. Based on an analysis of thresholds for odour and sensory irritation selected compounds are recommended for measurements to assess the indoor air quality and to minimize reports of irritation symptoms, deteriorated performance, and cardiovascular and pulmonary effects.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:

BACKGROUND:
Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) and psychosocial problems are common in schools worldwide, yet longitudinal research on the issue is scarce. We examined whether the level of or a change in pupil-reported school environment (IAQ, school satisfaction, and bullying) predicts recorded sick leaves among teachers.
METHODS:
Changes in the school environment were assessed using pupil surveys at two time points (2001/02 and 2004/05) in 92 secondary schools in Finland. Variables indicating change were based on median values at baseline. We linked these data to individual-level records of teachers' (n = 1678) sick leaves in 2001--02 and in 2004--05.
RESULTS:
Multilevel multinomial logistic regression models adjusted for baseline sick leave and covariates showed a decreased risk for short-term (one to three days) sick leaves among teachers working in schools with good perceived IAQ at both times (OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.5-0.9), and for those with a positive change in IAQ (OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.4-0.9), compared to teachers in schools where IAQ was constantly poor. Negative changes in pupil school satisfaction (OR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.1-2.8) and bullying (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.0-2.3) increased the risk for short-term leaves among teachers when compared to teachers in schools where the level of satisfaction and bullying had remained stable. School environment factors were not associated with long-term sick leaves.
CONCLUSIONS:
Good and improved IAQ are associated with decreased teacher absenteeism. While pupil-related psychosocial factors also contribute to sick leaves, no effect modification or mediation of psychosocial factors on the association between IAQ and sick leave was observed.

Polluting The Water With Toothpaste, Shampoo, And Drugs

Polluting The Water With Toothpaste, Shampoo, And Drugs

"OREGON CITY, Ore. — Dave Sohm's house is immaculate. Every tool in the garage has its own hook. The kitchen countertops gleam.  But in his house –- as with most houses –- toxic chemicals are hiding in plain sight.  Sohm wants to know where. "I'm curious about what things there are," he says. "I don't know what impacts I may be having that I'm not even aware of."  Jen Coleman, an outreach director for the Oregon Environmental Council is at Sohm's house to help. Armed with a list of chemicals that have toxic effects on people and the environment, Coleman digs through cabinets, checks ingredient lists and compares them with contaminants that have been found in local waterways."

Retract the Flawed 'Organic Study' Linked to Big Tobacco and Pro-GMO Corps

[COMMENT:  Very biased viewpoint on this study and article below trying to downplay the truth of the flawed study. Over and over again, these industry funded organic vs. conventional studies look only at nutritional content. Who eats organic because they think it has more nutrients? No one. People eat organic to avoid toxic pesticides and because they support a farming method that is more environmentally friendly and kind to the soil. Irregardless of the researchers opinion, it is significant to find less pesticides in the body / urine of people eating organic. Claiming "we don't know" whether that has any health significance is just plain ignorance and amounts to putting ones head in the sand. Likewise, conventional products have been shown to contain more antibiotic resistant bacteria.  Please sign petition to retract the study below.]

"Nighttime noise pollution -- in particular the din of traffic -- in urban areas puts city residents at risk for disrupted sleep and annoyance, researchers report.

Such chronic sleep disturbance could lead to serious health consequences, including increased risk for heart attack and high blood pressure, according to the new study. In addition, nighttime noise can also lead to poor sleep quality, which can cause morning tiredness and insomnia."

Abstract
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex disorder that affects up to 5% of the general population worldwide. Both mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation have been implicated in the pathophysiology of FM. We have investigated the possible relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation in FM. We studied thirty women diagnosed with FM and twenty healthy women. Blood mononuclear cells (BMCs) from FM patients showed reduced level of CoQ10, mtDNA contents, and high level of mitochondrial ROS, serum TNF-alpha and transcript levels. A significant negative correlation between CoQ10 and TNF-alpha levels (r = -0.588; P<0.01), and a positive correlation between ROS and TNF-alpha levels (r = 0.791; P<0.001) were observed accompanied by a significant correlation of VAS with serum TNF-alpha and transcript levels (r = 0.4507; P<0.05 and r = 0.7089; P<0.001, respectively). TNF-alpha release was observed in an in vitro (BMCs) and in vivo (mice) CoQ10 deficiency model. Oral CoQ10 supplementation restored biochemical parameters and induced a significant improvement in clinical symptoms (P0.001). These results lead to the hypothesis that inflammation could be a mitochondrial dysfunction-dependent event implicated in the pathophysiology of FM in several patients indicating at mitochondria as a possible new therapeutic target.

Taking action on developmental toxicity: Scientists' duties to protect children

Taking action on developmental toxicity: Scientists' duties to protect children

Kristin Shrader-Frechette.  Environmental Health 2012, 11:61 doi:10.1186/1476-069X-11-61

Abstract (provisional)

Background
Although adaptation and proper biological functioning require developmental programming, pollutant interference can cause developmental toxicity or DT.

Objectives
This commentary assesses whether it is ethical for citizens/physicians/scientists to allow avoidable DT.

Methods
Using conceptual, economic, ethical, and logical analysis, the commentary assesses what major ethical theories and objectors would say regarding the defensibility of allowing avoidable DT.

Results
The commentary argues that (1) none of the four major ethical theories (based, respectively, on virtue, natural law, utility, or equity) can consistently defend avoidable DT because it unjustifiably harms, respectively, individual human flourishing, human life, the greatest good, and equality. (2) Justice also requires leaving "as much and as good" biological resources for all, including future generations possibly harmed if epigenetic change is heritable. (3) Scientists/physicians have greater justice-based duties, than ordinary/average citizens, to help stop DT because they help cause it and have greater professional abilities/opportunities to help stop it. (4) Scientists/physicians likewise have greater justice-based duties, than ordinary/average citizens, to help stop DT because they benefit more from it, given their relatively greater education/consumption/income. The paper shows that major objections to (3)-(4) fail on logical, ethical, or scientific grounds, then closes with practical suggestions for implementing its proposals.

Conclusions
Because allowing avoidable DT is ethically indefensible, citizens---and especially physicians/scientists---have justice-based duties to help stop DT.
