Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Beleaguered, Part 2

PDF: http://www.mcs-america.org/March2008pg12345.pdf

Last month a basic overview of the industry disinformation campaign against multiple chemical sensitivity was presented.  This month continues to  explore this issues in more depth.   As a fitting start to this months exploration, Mary Ebeling's Beyond Advertising: The Pharmaceutical Industry's Hidden Marketing Tactics was published on February 21st at PR Watch.  In her article, Ebeling describes the marketing tactics engaged in by pharmaceutical companies to increase profits, including celebrity endorsements and specific communication targets for direct to consumer drug advertisements aimed at mothers of certain income.

Mission of Truth:  Critical Thinking, Part 2:  Ambiguity
PDF: http://www.mcs-america.org/March2008pg678.pdf

In a world where science is biased, facts are manipulated, doctors are mislead, industry acts to misinform, and few can be trusted, when it comes to controversial illnesses, such as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), fibromyalgia (FM), and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), patients, doctors, and researchers must employ critical thinking skills as they are essential to finding the truth.  Each month, this column explores methods of critical thinking necessary for scientists and patient to sort through the bunk and get to the facts and real truth.  This month we will examine the pitfall of ambiguity.

Hypothalmic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis Dysregulation
PDF: http://www.mcs-america.org/March2008pg10.pdf

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia (FM), and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction all share something in common.  The question is whether they are correlated.  And if they are correlated, which comes first?  Can treating one, correct the other?

If a man were to walk onto private property unwelcome, he would be trespassing under a law enacted to afford a remedy for injury to property.  Yet, each day, hundreds of common, yet unwelcome and potentially toxic, chemicals drift through the air onto private property and little concern for injury to health is expressed.  Chemical trespass is the involuntary deposition of toxic or potentially toxic chemicals within a human body.

Individuals and families of those with autism, multiple chemical sensitivity, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and other illnesses  have long blamed the toxic effects of chemicals for their symptoms.  Indeed many parents can trace autism back to a vaccination reaction.  Those with multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia can sometimes trace their declining health back to a toxic exposure.

Spray That Mosquito?
Researchers at the Neurotoxicology Division of the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory performed a critical analysis of research literature on pyrethroid-induced  neurobehavioral toxicity and other adverse effects in adult animals.  Pyrethroids are a class of synthetic chemical insecticides similar to the natural pesticide pyrethrum.  They are commonly used for mosquito control.

Air Fresheners Pollute Indoor Air
There are many indoor air quality factors that affect the health and comfort of occupants, including temperature, air circulation, radon, molds, personal fragrances, pesticides, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, asbestos, ozone, smoke, cleaning chemicals, chemicals contained in furnishings, and other volatile organic compounds.  Volatile organic compounds come from paints, solvents, pesticides, air fresheners, aerosol sprays, and adhesives, among others. Particulate pollution comes from dust, pollen, fireplaces, wood stoves, kerosene/gas heaters.

What Motivated You to Launch MCS America?
MCS America was born... out of my outrage at the lack of information, social support, and viable alternatives for people with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), coupled with outrage over the corruption, lies, deceit, and blatant denial that MCS exists in the name of industry profits, while more and more people find their lives stolen, their candle snuffed out, their world forever changed.

MCS America has a new public listserve that anyone is welcome to join without an application.  The focus and operation of this list will be different than our other groups. A description of each is provided below.  You are invited to join one or more applicable listserves.

The mission of MCS America (MCSA) is to gain medical, legal, and social recognition for multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) as a disorder of organic biological origin induced by toxic environmental insults.  Secondarily, MCSA seeks to ensure that environmental toxicants are identified, reduced, regulated, and enforced through lobbying for effective legislation.
