"A variety of long-banned and currently-released chemicals found in pregnant women are associated with an increased risk of neural tube defects in their babies, reports a study of Chinese women. The chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) include a variety of pesticides, industrial-use chemicals and compounds released from the burning of fossil fuels."
