Abstract
Arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury exposures are ubiquitous. These toxic elements have no physiological benefits, engendering interest in minimizing body burden. The physiological process of sweating has long been regarded as "cleansing" and of low risk. Reports of toxicant levels in sweat were sought in Medline, Embase, Toxline, Biosis, and AMED as well as reference lists and grey literature, from inception to March 22, 2011. Of 122 records identified, 24 were included in evidence synthesis. Populations, and sweat collection methods and concentrations varied widely. In individuals with higher exposure or body burden, sweat generally exceeded plasma or urine concentrations, and dermal could match or surpass urinary daily excretion. Arsenic dermal excretion was severalfold higher in arsenic-exposed individuals than in unexposed controls. Cadmium was more concentrated in sweat than in blood plasma. Sweat lead was associated with high-molecular-weight molecules, and in an interventional study, levels were higher with endurance compared with intensive exercise. Mercury levels normalized with repeated saunas in a case report. Sweating deserves consideration for toxic element detoxification. Research including appropriately sized trials is needed to establish safe, effective therapeutic protocols.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/26/usa-food-24-d-idUSL2E8FPILH20120426

"April 26 (Reuters) - Opponents of a new biotech corn variety developed by Dow AgroSciences are making a final push to get U.S. regulators to reject Dow's application to roll out herbicide-tolerant crops that critics believe will wreak havoc on the environment and endanger human health. Farmers, scientists and consumer groups scheduled a news conference on Thursday to urge U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to shut down Dow's regulatory application for a multi-crop project it calls "Enlist."  Opponents of Dow's new Enlist corn said opponents have submitted more than 350,000 letters, emails and other public comments against the product.  Dow wants to roll out Enlist corn, soybeans and cotton along with an Enlist herbicide that are able to survive dousings of a combination of the herbicide 2,4-D with glyphosate. The new chemical aims to wipe out weeds that have become resistant to glyphosate alone."

The paper is open access. For more on the new paper, see the write-ups from the Yale press office and IEEE Spectrum.

The Yale study lends support to the surprising finding, reported a couple of years ago that young children born to mothers who had used cell phones during pregnancy were more likely to have behavioral disorders, such as hyperactivity and emotional problems. That 2008 study was repeated by the same group in 2010 with similar results."

Complex organochlorine pesticide mixtures as determinant factor for breast cancer risk: a population-based case-control study in the Canary Islands (Spain)

Complex organochlorine pesticide mixtures as determinant factor for breast cancer risk: a population-based case-control study in the Canary Islands (Spain)

Environmental Health 2012, 11:28 doi:10.1186/1476-069X-11-28.  Published: 25 April 2012
Abstract (provisional)
Background
All the relevant risk factors contributing to breast cancer etiology are not fully known. Exposure to organochlorine pesticides has been linked to an increased incidence of the disease, although not all data have been consistent. Most published studies evaluated the exposure to organochlorines individually, ignoring the potential effects exerted by the mixtures of chemicals.
Methods
This population-based study was designed to evaluate the profile of mixtures of organochlorines detected in 103 healthy women and 121 women diagnosed with breast cancer from Gran Canaria Island, and the relation between the exposure to these compounds and breast cancer risk.
Results
The most prevalent mixture of organochlorines among healthy women was the combination of lindane and endrin, and this mixture was not detected in any affected women. Breast cancer patients presented more frequently a combination of aldrin, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD), and this mixture was not found in any healthy woman. After adjusting for covariables, the risk of breast cancer was moderately associated with DDD (OR = 1.008, confidence interval 95% 1.001-1.015, p = 0.024).
Conclusions
This study indicates that healthy women show a very different profile of organochlorine pesticide mixtures than breast cancer patients, suggesting that organochlorine pesticide mixtures could play a relevant role in breast cancer risk.

Backyard burning banned

"The state Department of Health Clean Air Branch has officially extended its ban on backyard burning of yard and household trash from Oahu only to all the islands.

Chemical in Food Packaging, Fabric Coatings Linked to Cancer

"An independent scientific panel approved by the DuPont company as part of a class action lawsuit has linked an industrial chemical known as C-8 or PFOA to kidney and testicular cancer in humans.

"Widespread pollution by PFOA should be a wake-up call that our chemical regulation system is severely broken," said Olga V. Naidenko, Ph.D., a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group. "It is particularly urgent for the Environmental Protection Agency to develop a legal limit for drinking water pollution by PFOA, which is currently unregulated and never should have come to market.""

If the food's in plastic, what's in the food?

"In a study published last year in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, researchers put five San Francisco families on a three-day diet of food that hadn't been in contact with plastic. When they compared urine samples before and after the diet, the scientists were stunned to see what a difference a few days could make: The participants' levels of bisphenol A (BPA), which is used to harden polycarbonate plastic, plunged — by two-thirds, on average — while those of the phthalate DEHP, which imparts flexibility to plastics, dropped by more than half."

Abstract
Contact allergy is detected in every second child with the symptoms of chronic or recurrent eczema, and in every third child the final diagnosis is allergic contact dermatitis. Haptens responsible for the majority of contact sensitizations in children are substances ubiquitous in our environment, e.g. metals, preservatives, fragrances, propolis, and balsam of Peru. Much concern is provoked by the higher rates of sensitization to fragrances in younger children, compared to adolescents, which may be attributed to the higher exposure nowadays of infants and children to fragrant products. On the other hand, a limitation of exposure to the preservatives thimerosal and Kathon CG has resulted in decreased rates of sensitization to these haptens. Altogether, these observations demonstrate that the rates of contact sensitizations in children reflect changes in their environment, and limitations imposed on the use of haptens with strong sensitizing properties, may be an effective tool in the prevention of contact allergy.

Urgent National Action Alert!

OCA has learned, as we reported last week, that Vermont may not pass the GMO Labeling law now languishing in the state legislature, because Monsanto has threatened to sue the state if they pass the bill. According to informed sources, Vermont Governor Peter Schumlin is probably the only one who can save the bill from dying in this legislature session, which ends May 1. Please get on the phone right now to Governor Schumlin and tell him not to buckle under Monsanto's biotech bullying. We need a GMO labeling bill and we need one right now. Vermont can and should lead the way! Other states will follow.

Please pick up the phone now and call Governor Schumlin's office:

Millions Against Monsanto: The Food Fight of Our Lives By Ronnie Cummins

"For nearly two decades, Monsanto and corporate agribusiness have exercised near-dictatorial control over American agriculture, aided and abetted by indentured politicians and regulatory agencies, supermarket chains, giant food processors, and the so-called "natural" products industry. Finally, public opinion around the biotech industry's contamination of our food supply and destruction of our environment has reached the tipping point. We're fighting back. This November, in a food fight that will largely determine the future of what we eat and what we grow, Monsanto will face its greatest challenge to date: a statewide citizens' ballot initiative that will give Californians the opportunity to vote for their right to know whether the food they buy is contaminated with GMOs."

EPA Rejects Ban on Dioxin-Tainted "Agent Orange" Herbicide

New 2,4-D-Resistant GMO Corn Will Increase Use 50 Times Over

It is well known that the toxic herbicide 2,4-D causes cancer, hormone disruption, genetic mutations, neurotoxicity, Parkinson's Disease, and birth defects. But, instead of relying on independent research on the dangers of 2,4-D, the EPA looked at contradictory evidence submitted by the herbicide's manufacturer, Dow Chemical. This bias caused the EPA to reject a ban on the dioxin-tainted Agent Orange herbicide. The EPA's failure to ban or limit the use of 2,4-D paves the way for the USDA to approve Dow Chemical's new genetically engineered 2,4-D resistant corn. If this Agent Orange corn is approved, it will increase the use of 2,4-D 50 times over. The manufacture and use of 2,4-D is the 7th largest source of dioxin pollution. Dioxin is the most toxic compound synthesized by man.

Dioxin pollution never goes away, and instead accumulates in the environment, in the meat, fish, eggs and dairy we eat, and, ultimately, in our bodies. Recent Environmental Working Group studies have found that nursing infants are exposed to a daily dose of dioxin that can be 15 to 17 times higher than the level EPA considers safe to protect the endocrine and immune systems.

Take Action:

Call EPA's Fail! Tell the EPA You Won't Accept a Decision on 2,4-D Based on Dow Chemical's Biased Studies!

Tell USDA to Stop Agent Orange Corn!

Just One of Monsanto's Crimes, Or Why We Can't Trust the EPA

2,4-D and the dioxin pollution it creates are too dangerous to allow, period. What is the Environmental Protection Agency doing? Helping cover up the chemical companies' crimes! In February, Monsanto agreed to pay up to $93 million in a class-action lawsuit brought by the residents of Nitro, West Virginia, for dioxin exposure from accidents and pollution at an herbicide plant in their town from 1929 to 2004. That may seem like justice, but it is actually the result of Monsanto's extraordinary efforts to hide the truth, evade criminal prosecution and avoid legal responsibility. A brief criminal fraud investigation conducted (and quickly aborted) by the EPA revealed that Monsanto used a disaster at their Nitro, WV, plant to manufacture "evidence" that dioxin exposure produced a skin condition called chloracne, but was not responsible for neurological health effects or cancers such as Non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

These conclusions were repeatedly utilized by EPA and the Veterans Administration to deny help to citizens exposed to dioxin. The EPA knew the truth about Monsanto's dioxin crimes, but it decided to hide it. Why? It would have affected us all. EPA's brief criminal investigation of Monsanto included evidence that Monsanto knowingly contaminated Lysol with dioxin, even as the product was being marketed for cleaning babies' toys.

Local Food Under Attack! Defend Community Self-Governance!

At the federal level, all seems lost. With former Monsanto lawyer-lobbyist Michael Taylor ruling as Food Safety Czar, it's little wonder that the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) - granted vast new powers under the Food Safety Modernization Act - continues to criminalize family farmers who keep a few cows, pigs or chickens and sell to their neighbors, while ignoring poultry laced with arsenic and illegal antibiotics, MRSA-tainted pork and pink slime.

At the local level, people are finding ways to defend local farmers from federal attack. In March 2011, the town of Sedgwick, Maine, population 1,012, became the first town in the United States to declare its "food sovereignty" by passing a Local Food and Community Self-Governance Ordinance. To date, six towns in Hancock County, Maine, have passed the ordinance, as have localities in Vermont, Massachusetts, and California. Food sovereignty laws have been introduced at the state level in Georgia, Montana, North Carolina, Utah and Wyoming.

Blue Hill is one of the five Maine towns with a Local Food and Community Self-Governance Ordinance. Last November, Dan Brown, owner of Gravelwood Farm in Blue Hill, Maine, was served notice that he is being sued by the State of Maine for selling food and milk without State licenses, a direct challenge to the local law.

Local food sovereignty supporters are mobilizing to protect Farmer Brown and defend the ordinance. On April 17, the We Are All Farmer Brown Campaign will deliver a petition signed by over 2,300 people to Gov. Paul LePage asking him to drop the lawsuit against Dan Brown and Gravelwood Farm.

Another Crazy State Law Is One More Reason to Support Local Food Sovereignty

Stuart Kunkle has ten pigs at his small farm south of Traverse City, Michigan. Some are mulefoots and others are mangalitsas. These are heritage pigs, hairy and black with ears that stand up. Kunkle's pigs might soon be illegal under a new Michigan Department of Natural Resources Regulation that purports to enforce a ban on keeping wild pigs - the intent was to shut down ranches that sell wild boar hunts - based on what they look like. The trouble is, there's only one species of pig, but heritage varieties have diverse physical characteristics while those bred for factory farms all look the same.

The Michigan Pork Producers Association and other large agribusiness interests, support the new rule. For the factory pork breeders, this is a convenient means of eliminating the competition.

BioDemocracy: Using Local Sovereignty to Protect Ourselves From Corporations and Corporate-Controlled State and Federal Governments

This is the subject of a workshop OCA Political Director Alexis Baden-Mayer is giving at the National Occupation of Washington, D.C. Social Forum tomorrow.

The workshop is inspired and informed by the excellent work the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF) has done to help localities defend their right to self-determination, participatory democracy, community-control over shared resources, and protection from corporations that want to raid resources or pollute.

In their Democracy School (available online and in your town), CELDF teaches that, since the late 19th century, corporate lawyers have used the 14th Amendment (meant to protect African American after the Civil War) to obtain constitutional rights for corporations and the Commerce Clause (for free trade among the several states) to strip localities and individuals of their sovereignty.

CELDF lays out a road-map for how to turn this around through the passage of local ordinances and home rule charters (local constitutions) that assert that:

– corporations are not people & they don't have special rights
– the rights of the people, their local government and their environment are superior to corporate interests,
– corporations, and the people behind them, can be held accountable for the harms they cause to people and the environment, and
– corporations cannot use their money to lobby the local government or influence elections

If the Author of Food Politics Has Ties to Monsanto, Shouldn't Readers Know?

Frances Moore Lappé is taking on the Oxford University Press, publisher of Food Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know, after learning that not only is the book full of unsubstantiated claims - no citations whatsoever - but its author, Robert Paarlberg, was an advisor to the CEO of Monsanto. Lappé is asking people to tell the esteemed academic publisher that conflicts of interests such as Paarlberg's relationship to Monsanto should be revealed to readers, as should the fact that the Gates Foundation, which supported Paarlberg's work, is a Monsanto shareholder.

On April 25, Lappé will deliver a petition to Oxford University Press in Oxford, England. The petition asks that the University's Press uphold three basic standards (none of which were met by Food Politics): citations for evidence-based claims, full disclosure of potential conflicts of interest (whether financial or other associations), and accurate promotion of publications.

In an article published this week, Lappé says: "We believe our appeal goes to the very heart of democracy itself; for, absent transparency and commitment to evidence-based argument (impossible if authors provide no sources for claims!) democracy's lifeblood - open, fair dialogue - drains away."

Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a chronic condition characterized by recurrent, non-specific symptoms in response to chemically unrelated exposures in non-toxic concentrations. Although the pathophysiology of MCS remains unknown, central sensitization may be an important factor contributing to the clinical manifestations.
PURPOSE:
To use quantitative sensory testing (QST) to study central hyperexcitability and multiple aspects of central sensory processing in MCS patients without comorbid overlapping disorders and to compare the results with those among matched controls.
METHODS:
15 MCS patients and 15 healthy matched controls underwent QST to assess the following aspects of pain: capsaicin-induced secondary punctate hyperalgesia, stimulus response function (SRF) to punctate mechanical stimuli before and after capsaicin injection, temporal summation to punctate stimuli post capsaicin injection, pressure pain thresholds, heat pain thresholds, tonic heat stimulation and conditioning pain modulation (CPM: formerly known as diffuse noxious inhibitory control or DNIC).
RESULTS:
The mean area of capsaicin-induced secondary punctate hyperalgesia was significantly larger in MCS patients than in controls at 5, 30 and 60min post capsaicin injection (p=0.01). In addition MCS patients reported higher ratings in response to punctate mechanical stimuli assessed by SRF compared with controls (p<0.001). The CPM test induced significantly higher pain ratings in patients than in controls (p=0.002). We found no group differences in pressure pain and heat pain thresholds, temporal summation to punctate stimuli post capsaicin injection, capsaicin and tonic heat pain ratings or CPM effect.
CONCLUSION:
Increased capsaicin-induced secondary punctate hyperalgesia was demonstrated in MCS patients without comorbid, overlapping disorders, suggesting facilitated central sensitization in MCS.

Drug Data Shouldn't Be Secret
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/11/opinion/drug-data-shouldnt-be-secret.html

"IN the fall of 2009, at the height of fears over swine flu, our research group discovered that a majority of clinical trial data for the anti-influenza drug Tamiflu — data that proved, according to its manufacturer, that the drug reduced the risk of hospitalization, serious complications and transmission — were missing, unpublished and inaccessible to the research community. From what we could tell from the limited clinical data that had been published in medical journals, the country's most widely used and heavily stockpiled influenza drug appeared no more effective than aspirin."

http://www.nih.gov/news/health/apr2012/niehs-04.htm

"Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have discovered how exposure to arsenic can turn normal stem cells into cancer stem cells and spur tumor growth. Inorganic arsenic, which affects the drinking water of millions of people worldwide, has been previously shown to be a human carcinogen. A growing body of evidence suggests that cancer is a stem-cell based disease. Normal stem cells are essential to normal tissue regeneration, and to the stability of organisms and processes. But cancer stem cells are thought to be the driving force for the formation, growth, and spread of tumors."

EPA cancels $20-million green chemistry grant program, gives no explanation

EPA cancels $20-million green chemistry grant program, gives no explanation
http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ehs/news/2012/green-chemistry-funding

"In an announcement that stunned scientists, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has cancelled grant applications for what was supposed to be a $20-million, four-year green chemistry program. The mysterious cancellation comes less than three weeks before the deadline for the proposals. The grants, which were supposed to fund four new centers, would have been a major new source of funding for green chemistry, a field that seeks to design environmentally friendly chemicals and processes that can replace toxic substances. The requests for proposals may be reissued, the EPA said. But the program's sudden halt and uncertain future -- and lack of explanation -- have left scientists disheartened. "My reaction is shock that it happened and total dismay that what appeared to be a novel program was cancelled without warning or explanation," said Eric Beckman, a chemical engineer at the University of Pittsburgh."

Abstract

An increasing number of people worldwide complain that they have become electromagnetic hypersensitive (EHS). We conducted a questionnaire survey of EHS persons in Japan. The aim was to identify electromagnetic fields (EMF) and plausible EMF sources that caused their symptoms. Postal questionnaires were distributed via a self-help group, and 75 participants (95% women) responded. Reported major complaints were "fatigue/tiredness" (85%), "headache", "concentration, memory, and thinking" difficulty (81%, respectively). Seventy-two per cent used some form of complementary/alternative therapy. The most plausible trigger of EHS onset was a mobile phone base station or personal handy-phone system (37%). Sixty-five percent experienced health problems to be due to the radiation from other passengers' mobile phones in trains or buses, and 12% reported that they could not use public transportation at all. Fifty-three percent had a job before the onset, but most had lost their work and/or experienced a decrease in income. Moreover, 85.3% had to take measures to protect themselves from EMF, such as moving to low EMF areas, or buying low EMF electric appliances. EHS persons were suffering not only from their symptoms, but also from economical and social problems.
